The Atlantic Ocean exerts the most dominant influence on Ireland's climate and as a result, Ireland experiences less extreme ranges of temperature than other countries at latitudes similar to Ireland's.
The average annual temperature in Ireland is 9°C. However, the east and middle of Ireland tend to experience more extreme temperatures, with Irish summer temperatures rising to 19°C and dropping to 2°C during Ireland's winter.
Ireland is also known for its rainfall; low-lying areas receive on average 1000mm per year whereas in the Irish mountainous areas, rainfall can rise to 2000mm per annum.
