Malta
Overview
Malta lies in the middle of the Mediterranean, the largest of a group of three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino.
Due primarily to its location off Italy and the African coast, Malta has had a rich history which has given rise, amongst other things, to a unique language - Maltese - and culture all of its own. Apart from its beaches and water-based activities, Malta offers also a wealth of ancient ruins, and historic monuments and buildings.
The island of Malta is just over 23 km long and 14.5 km wide. Malta has a population of approximately 345,000.
Weather
As a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta has a weather system which is strongly influenced by the sea. Malta's climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, wet autumns and cool winters.
Malta's summers see temperatures of up to (and sometimes above) 30°C, and Malta's mild winters generally see temperatures in the 10°C range. Any cold winter weather is typically brought by the strong winds from Central Europe.
Main resorts & attractions
A popular destination for lovers of watersports, Malta offers all kinds of water-based activities, from diving, to sea-kayak, sailing and fishing.
Malta's stunning scenery is also a tourist draw.
But it's mostly for its unique history that Malta is known and which brings tourists of all kinds to Maltese shores. Home to some of the world's oldest temples, Malta was home to Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and the French, and more latterly the English and was the official base of the Knights of Malta. It is from this mix of races that the unique Maltese language has been formed.
Historic places of interest are: the Temple of Hagar Qim and the nearby temple Mnajdra, both set in one of Malta's Heritage Parks; the Tarxien Temples, Malta's richest find of prehistoric objects; Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Fort St Angelo, Vittoriosa, HQ of the Knights of Malta; Mdina, one of Malta's medieval walled cities; and, last but not least, Valletta, Malta's capital which can boast any number of museums, historical monuments and places of note, together with one of Europe's oldest theatres.
